MICHAILIDIS
Biography
Gelos Michailidis was born in 1968 in Utrecht, The Netherlands.
He began his artistic journey as a graffiti artist in 1986, a practice he pursued for several years. Self-taught, he later turned to painting in 2009, drawing inspiration from the great tradition of Dutch landscape painting.
Initially focused on seascapes, dunes, and expansive skies, Michailidis developed a fascination with light, space, and the subtle interplay of shadows across natural landscapes.
In recent years, his work has centered on the sea and the movement of waves. The ever-changing structure of water—its foam, splashes, and transparency—offers endless compositional possibilities. Through a meticulous layering of oil paint on panel, he captures depth, light, and the shifting qualities of the ocean.
Working from photographs taken at different times and conditions, he studies each detail before transforming these references into his own idealized vision. The result is a body of hyperrealistic yet deeply personal works, where light, movement, and atmosphere converge.
