Biography

Michael Sole is a British painter who graduated with a BA in Fine Art from Wimbledon College of Arts in 2008. His work has received several distinctions in major art competitions, including recognition from the Royal Society of Marine Artists.
Deeply inspired by nature, Sole develops his paintings through an immersive relationship with the landscape. Spending long periods outdoors, he observes and experiences the environment directly, allowing its energy, atmosphere and physical presence to inform his work.
His practice explores painting as a dynamic process. Through expressive gestures—dripping, pouring, lifting and manipulating the paint—he captures the power and movement of natural elements such as storms and turbulent seas.
Central to his approach is the concept of “Involuntaryism”, where the natural behavior of paint and gravity plays an active role in the creation of the image. By guiding rather than controlling the materials, Sole allows organic textures and spontaneous marks to emerge, giving each painting a sense of vitality and independence.
